Lots has happened since our little Violet came into our lives. Baby Violet grew into toddler Violet and before we knew it we had a little lady on our hands. I'm sure I'm not alone as a mother when I say how emotional I get just thinking about where the time went and where the baby version of Violet went too. She can sing songs in French, make believe better than I could ever imagine and still dances up a storm any chance she can get. I don't know where she gets her moves and rhythm from!?<div><br><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C6sYcy_pfi4/VGRZpE6uwDI/AAAAAAAABr8/y9DfAYXsVmQ/s640/blogger-image--642342849.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C6sYcy_pfi4/VGRZpE6uwDI/AAAAAAAABr8/y9DfAYXsVmQ/s640/blogger-image--642342849.jpg"></a></div></div></div></div></div></div><br></div><div> Violet also became a big sister last year! Baby Penelope Monroe arrived almost 2 years to the day her sister was born. She has the most contagious smile, laughs at everything, and loves to nuzzle and cuddle. She's just taken up dancing like her big sis and it's just about the cutest thing I've ever seen watching these two have their nightly dance parties while daddy plays dj.<div><div>Our blue eyed blondie is quite the observer. In many ways she's very much the opposite to her big sister and in a lot of ways the same. <div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-HwtATFR51X4/VGUeRtTe-hI/AAAAAAAABso/vyLw_DRVRMw/s640/blogger-image--1567497198.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-HwtATFR51X4/VGUeRtTe-hI/AAAAAAAABso/vyLw_DRVRMw/s640/blogger-image--1567497198.jpg"></a></div></div><div><br></div><div>Since I know I'm not the blogger I wish I could be I've decided to make this more my personal journal of my life and my family. That way there's no pressure or expectation and that's WAY more my speed. </div><div><br></div><div>A few months ago we moved from Edmonton back to Victoria. Nathaniel was released from the military and we decided raising the girls around the love and support of family was just the right thing to do for us. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-SHFqvoGS7as/VGRXo3MWQfI/AAAAAAAABrI/-9-lrDh8mKI/s640/blogger-image-1916900714.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-SHFqvoGS7as/VGRXo3MWQfI/AAAAAAAABrI/-9-lrDh8mKI/s640/blogger-image-1916900714.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>A rare opportunity to build a home came our way and with the added bonus of having my sister (aunty Jess) and her amazing husband (uncle Ian) build next door it was a chance we couldn't refuse. </div><div><br></div><div>We took possession of our land August 1st 2014 and finally on October 18th 2014 we broke ground!!!! Since that first dig we have seen fast and furious changes everyday on our build and it's beyond exciting for us to say the least. I daydream and imagine the wonderful home we will soon have to raise our girls in and all the memories that will fill the walls. An elementary school up the street, a pastoral view, a short commute to work, Nathaniel having a space to work from home, all the while having my sister and her husband next door seems nothing short than a dream come true to me. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SZKveeEAYsM/VGRZhpD8OgI/AAAAAAAABrc/E_gobsArj8Y/s640/blogger-image--650167048.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SZKveeEAYsM/VGRZhpD8OgI/AAAAAAAABrc/E_gobsArj8Y/s640/blogger-image--650167048.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I hope to update as we go and document this journey through building our first home here. Probably mostly through pictures since my hands are full with 2 little ones, a full time job, living out of suitcase while we build, and still trying to be a wife and best friend to my guy! I hope this blog will end up being something we can look back on as a record of some seriously amazing memories. </div><div><br></div><div>Week one:</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rcs-QRQdVBY/VGRZuzVXo8I/AAAAAAAABsU/jQHxhqFfbOg/s640/blogger-image-869170141.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rcs-QRQdVBY/VGRZuzVXo8I/AAAAAAAABsU/jQHxhqFfbOg/s640/blogger-image-869170141.jpg"></a></div><br></div></div></div></div><div>Week two:</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-zKZeJZXLeEk/VGRXqolJhcI/AAAAAAAABrQ/3J8eOl_CgZc/s640/blogger-image--168703606.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-zKZeJZXLeEk/VGRXqolJhcI/AAAAAAAABrQ/3J8eOl_CgZc/s640/blogger-image--168703606.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Later week two:<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-JtkAwkkvWN8/VGRZnWB6prI/AAAAAAAABr0/9d6cskEp6yI/s640/blogger-image--1599998136.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-JtkAwkkvWN8/VGRZnWB6prI/AAAAAAAABr0/9d6cskEp6yI/s640/blogger-image--1599998136.jpg"></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Week three:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Q97eeqE7TCw/VGRZtBsPRfI/AAAAAAAABsM/VNDVSrh_7So/s640/blogger-image-1839178721.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Q97eeqE7TCw/VGRZtBsPRfI/AAAAAAAABsM/VNDVSrh_7So/s640/blogger-image-1839178721.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Later week three:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G9K1heYrysE/VGRXnOe2slI/AAAAAAAABrA/tANno2-BkII/s640/blogger-image-1715879919.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G9K1heYrysE/VGRXnOe2slI/AAAAAAAABrA/tANno2-BkII/s640/blogger-image-1715879919.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-CWKm6SlGB18/VGRXj1l6FmI/AAAAAAAABq4/Ucm6WZDyFJE/s640/blogger-image-1440874621.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-CWKm6SlGB18/VGRXj1l6FmI/AAAAAAAABq4/Ucm6WZDyFJE/s640/blogger-image-1440874621.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-un31G3A3DdA/VGRZlTxubiI/AAAAAAAABrs/cPNlOB-J0Wg/s640/blogger-image-96181137.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-un31G3A3DdA/VGRZlTxubiI/AAAAAAAABrs/cPNlOB-J0Wg/s640/blogger-image-96181137.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-dXcdeD--p0c/VGRZjmEHqjI/AAAAAAAABrk/3ADLamhBcYg/s640/blogger-image--1194906151.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-dXcdeD--p0c/VGRZjmEHqjI/AAAAAAAABrk/3ADLamhBcYg/s640/blogger-image--1194906151.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-UfQAbKHEFW4/VGRZrJgpsWI/AAAAAAAABsE/1L8dMFhkfw0/s640/blogger-image--1820254628.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-UfQAbKHEFW4/VGRZrJgpsWI/AAAAAAAABsE/1L8dMFhkfw0/s640/blogger-image--1820254628.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div>Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01293156265765155765noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5554642467238193173.post-8436464219667440242012-07-15T00:44:00.001-06:002012-07-15T00:44:57.918-06:00Violet's NurserySince I live for surprises I was absolutely sure I wanted to wait until the day our baby was born to find out whether our little treasure was a boy or a girl! This did pose a few challenges though...mainly with baby clothing and nursery decor. So I decided I wanted a very gender neutral nursery and once our baby arrived I could add in girly or masculine details later. All I knew is I wanted a room fit for a little prince or princess! <br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/rebeccaobriendouglas/PaintingTheRosesWhite?authkey=Gv1sRgCPvikszc8bHeLQ#5765283129922451778'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ryPtTcE5YRo/UAJmdfyUeUI/AAAAAAAABUk/s4-oPDLtDLU/s288/0.jpg' border='0' width='191' height='281' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />I had a budget of $1000 and I believe I came in with money to spare spending a total of $800 on the room including paint and supplies. <br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/rebeccaobriendouglas/PaintingTheRosesWhite?authkey=Gv1sRgCPvikszc8bHeLQ#5765283171400777922'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TykGUi5SR7w/UAJmf6ThgMI/AAAAAAAABUs/dFymoj5ONSM/s288/1.jpg' border='0' width='200' height='281' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Besides the crib and ikea arm chair and a few other things, I made the sheet music artwork, the chalkboard wall plaque, and the rocking horse. They are all watercolors from various Etsy shops. <br /><br />I apologize for the poor quality of the photos. I was tired and pregnant when I took all but the last 3 with my iPhone. I am going to dust off my Canon Rebel and take some good quality photos soon and I'll do an updated post. Her room has actually changed quite a bit since I took these photos anyway. My step-grandma Joanne custom made Violet the most beautiful crib skirt and bumpers and so I can't wait to take some more recent photos of her crib.<br /><br />~Rebecca XO<br />Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01293156265765155765noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5554642467238193173.post-42162950564990425832012-07-13T08:27:00.001-06:002012-07-13T08:27:20.533-06:00Iron and rust removal!One new challenge I've had with a baby...even more so than with my pets...is constant stain removal! Especially on diaper change pad sheets and her bottom crib sheet! Not surprisingly all her nursery linens are white and usually my trusty bleach does the trick...but not always!<br /><br />Violet never ate baby food/pablums/fortified cereals. She just would NOT go for the mush! So we had to start her on finger food from 6 months on. The lucky part was she was eager and able to feed herself! The unlucky part is babies need the extra iron and vitamins in the fortified baby cereals to ensure proper growth and development. So the doctor recommended some vitamin supplements including Fer-in-sol so she could get the vital iron she needs! <br /><br />Herein lies my new stain fighting problem and exciting solution! Even though her iron supplement drops are clear, they can react with certain things and quickly turn into a nasty brown stain. So the other day I gave Violet her supplement while on her change pad. Without realizing (because it's clear) I must have dropped some on the change pad sheet. Well when I went to launder it it reacted with the laundry detergent and bleach I use and turned into a huge big brown stain. What was a tiny drop of iron supplement was now a brown stain the size of a side plate. <br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/rebeccaobriendouglas/PaintingTheRosesWhite?authkey=Gv1sRgCPvikszc8bHeLQ#5764660599125152786'><img src='https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-jEi9T_SGPvQ/UAAwRb2LlBI/AAAAAAAABUY/niYpbX4SgIk/s288/0.jpg' border='0' width='210' height='281' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />So after googling a while for ideas I decided to try saturating the stain in lemon juice and wait a few minutes and sprinkle salt on top. And it worked!!! The stain that I thought was going nowhere after bleaching it 3 times (which only made it worse) is now completely removed after 5 minutes of a lemon juice and salt solution! Amazing! And this also will work for rust stains too:)<br />Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01293156265765155765noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5554642467238193173.post-38267282388171344202012-07-12T22:38:00.001-06:002012-07-12T22:42:27.556-06:00DIY Sheet Music ArtSince we kept the gender of our baby a surprise we wanted to have gender neutral art for our baby's nursery. My whole pregnancy I was drooling over the Restoration Hardware nurseries when I saw an idea that caught my eye! Framed sheet music! I thought this was perfect for a boy or girl nursery. <br />So off I went on a sheet music hunting adventure to one of our local antique malls. And low and behold I didn't have to search long. I found a whole station filled with antique music books. I flipped through a few until I found a book of perfectly aged Violin sheet music, complete with perfect songs like 'Cradle Song' and 'Nocturne'. <br /><br />Next I headed to Michaels craft store where I found some very cheap frames on sale. I think they were around $5 each. I picked up some antique bronze spray paint as well so I could get the frames as close as possible to the look of the ones on the RH website. I had noted the size of the frames too off the RH website so I could get the same scale as well (20.5"x24.5").<br /><br />The ones on the RH site were $1195 for the set of 6 framed prints of 18th century sheet music art. All in, I paid less than $75 total for all 6 of my DIY version. <br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/rebeccaobriendouglas/PaintingTheRosesWhite?authkey=Gv1sRgCPvikszc8bHeLQ#5764509885515591442'><img src='https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-woW3gVAwXfM/T_-nMv5ibxI/AAAAAAAABUM/1SL7MmtvlGg/s288/0.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='203' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br />Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01293156265765155765noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5554642467238193173.post-3639483118573459522012-07-12T21:38:00.001-06:002012-07-12T21:38:15.212-06:00Baby Violet MadisonHi all! It's almost been a year since I made a blog entry but that is because our lives have been forever changed by our little munchkin Violet! She arrived September 29 and was healthy and beautiful and 7lbs and 20 inches long! The first thing I noticed about our little beauty was her dimples and her beautiful eyes which I couldn't stop staring at! <br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/07/12/4338.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/07/12/s_4338.jpg' border='0' width='210' height='281' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /> In LOVE with this girl<br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/07/12/4339.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/07/12/s_4339.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />She's 9 months now and just the most happy little baby I could have ever wished for! Being a mom has been a pretty big adjustment for me I'd say. Living in Edmonton with no help from family has been challenging. I fell in LOVE with these little vintage chalkboard wall hangings on the RH Baby website and so I ordered the large rectangle one with a special spot in mind to hang it! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SYw2RK7YKIk/TmWusfM_cdI/AAAAAAAABT4/KienzKTqxgI/s1600/chalkboard+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="311px" nba="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SYw2RK7YKIk/TmWusfM_cdI/AAAAAAAABT4/KienzKTqxgI/s320/chalkboard+2.jpg" width="320px" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">credit: RH Baby & Child</span></div><br />
BUT... unfortunately RH has sent me 4 different "sorry for the shipping delay" emails and so I got too impatient. Yet again I figured I could make my own version...even though I was SO looking forward to this one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zWnKrKaqYko/TmWutd6K1tI/AAAAAAAABT8/0RJe9vJMDww/s1600/chalkboard.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="311px" nba="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zWnKrKaqYko/TmWutd6K1tI/AAAAAAAABT8/0RJe9vJMDww/s320/chalkboard.jpg" width="320px" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Credit: RH Baby & Child</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div> I had no idea where I was going to get 'coloured' chalkboard paint...so I looked up online how to make your own coloured chalkboard paint and while at Michaels picking up supplies for the concoction low and behold I found that not only does Martha Stewart carry the PERFECT gray chalkboard paint but she also had shades in mint, and robins egg blue and of course black which I picked up as well! Martha you rock!<br />
<br />
I also picked up some champagne coloured ribbon and chalk!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uIjqgxtogPw/TmWuvC2aV_I/AAAAAAAABUA/ql4TyAOWZZY/s1600/ch3" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320px" nba="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uIjqgxtogPw/TmWuvC2aV_I/AAAAAAAABUA/ql4TyAOWZZY/s320/ch3" width="240px" /></a></div><br />
For the MDF board I needed I went to Home Depot where I rummaged through the scraps and found this perfect sized piece...and since it was my lucky day the guys at home depot sent me on my way free of charge!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--jOYx7mDW98/TmWuwBs1_jI/AAAAAAAABUE/ygqTYhf832s/s1600/ch4" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320px" nba="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--jOYx7mDW98/TmWuwBs1_jI/AAAAAAAABUE/ygqTYhf832s/s320/ch4" width="240px" /></a></div><br />
I used a dinner plate and a measuring tape to try and get the cuts right. I admit they are a little off but it just adds a not so perfect touch which I don't mind. Here is my final product, complete with a French saying to welcome our baby home to!<br />

</div>Although I did order a few items from the Restoration Hardware Baby site, I set out to create a few 'look-a-like' things of my own. One nursery item I fell in love with was this little vintage rocking horse off of the RH website... <br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2IOSgt3eRFU/TmWjueJi3cI/AAAAAAAABTk/4cQUnyFNnqM/s1600/horse2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="311px" nba="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2IOSgt3eRFU/TmWjueJi3cI/AAAAAAAABTk/4cQUnyFNnqM/s320/horse2.jpg" width="320px" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">credit: RH Baby & Child</span></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> It was on an earlier trip to Michaels for something else that I spied the craft of the week which was this little raw wood rocking horse which actually gave me the idea to make my own version of the RH toy instead of ordering one...and at $39 I couldn't resist!</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">So off to Michaels Craft Store I went again...in search of the perfect craft paint for the task at hand. To my surprise the Martha Stewart Craft Paint was 40% off! Score!</div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">I started out glazing the wood with the "rootbeer float" shade, then added the eye and some dark areas with the "vanilla bean" shade and finally white washed the whole horse with the shade called "wedding cake". And Voila! Since we don't know the gender of our baby I set out to create a very neutral nursery that would be perfect for our baby boy or girl! One of my all time favourite decor stores is Restoration Hardware and so I have to admit I clocked many many hours on the RH baby & child website collecting ideas and inspiration for our little nest!<br />
<br />
Here are all my favorite nursery inspiration photos:<br />

And there you have it... after hours of drooling over their website design gallery I chose elements of the rooms that made my heart sing and got my mojo back!<br />

Wow it sure has been a long long while! Im pretty certain I've lost many of you along the way...and I apologise. But the past 8.5 months have been the busiest, craziest ones in my entire life! And I know I have said that before but cross my heart! So to start I should let you know that shortly after we got home from our Christmas Vacation in Palm Springs I learned that I was PREGNANT!!!!! I still can't believe it and here I sit ready to pop! <br />
<br />
Right now I'm in my 35th week and the due date has been set for October 8th! We are actually taking some time off to travel back home to Victoria to have the baby!!!<br />
<br />
So as far as this pregnancy goes (my first) I really have nothing to compare it to but I can tell you one thing....BOY OH BOY was I sick for the first 4.5 months. So sick that I had Nathaniel throw out ALL of our house hold area rugs, relocate the cat litter to the basement, and hide all my body lotions, perfumes, scented candles, and home fragrance oils :( Anything that smelled like anything HAD TO GO! Even our poor dogs got a lot less attention during those first months....poor fellas. I barely got through my last semester of my university degree....but am happy and relieved to say that on June 21st I graduated with my Biological Sciences degree! Just in time too as it was a goal of mine to complete my degree before having kids :) <br />
<br />
So alas this is why I have all together abandoned the world of blogging. Pregnant, with almost every side effect I can think of, and scrambling to make it to class... I just didn't have any mind space or energy for any decorating, painting, or blogging. In fact, I JUST started and finished the nursery in the past few weeks...<br />
<br />
So for the sake of this blog being somewhat of a journal of my life here in Edmonton I thought I`d post a few photos of the evolution of my 'bump'!<br />
<br />
<br />

We are so excited about this new adventure in our lives!!! And in only a matter of weeks we will have our very own little bundle of joy!<br />
</div>Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01293156265765155765noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5554642467238193173.post-55196689467651526772010-11-24T23:36:00.003-07:002010-11-24T23:40:50.131-07:00Bryophyte ArtWhat are Bryophytes you might ask? Well the easy answer is Moss (and Hornworts and Liverworts)! And it just so happens one of my University courses this semester is all about these tiny little plants! <br />
<br />
One of our lab classes we went on a field exercise to collect various species of these guys to get a feel for their diversity! So after the day was done and I had collected over 20 different kinds of moss, I had an idea!!! Why not make my own moss book plates? So I picked up a bunch of small cheap frames at Ikea and some paper and glue....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TO3_NPXmAzI/AAAAAAAABR4/lleZ32huVPg/s1600/IMG_2585.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" ox="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TO3_NPXmAzI/AAAAAAAABR4/lleZ32huVPg/s400/IMG_2585.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
I carefully removed each species of moss from my lab book (I had taped them on LOL) and glued them onto the paper backings I cut to fit the frames. While the glue was drying I carefully wrote the scientific name of each moss on the paper and a few of the species unique growth/life characteristics! (these are easy to find via google)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TO3-8SrGJNI/AAAAAAAABR0/xy1QpDBCTx0/s1600/IMG_2584.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" ox="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TO3-8SrGJNI/AAAAAAAABR0/xy1QpDBCTx0/s640/IMG_2584.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Here they all are framed and ready to go up on the wall! You could really do this with so many different things although I really do think mosses are so perfect for this because there are so many different kinds, they are easy to find, and they add the most beautiful touches of green to your home! No matter how dry they get they won't lose their colour! And you can always fake the species genus name lol!!! I mean how often do we have a Bryophyte expert over? hee hee!</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

Last Rememberance Day Nathaniel had only been gone for 11 days. My sister and I attended a memorial service at Rundle Park here in Edmonton....watching the widows, parents, children, brothers, sisters and friends plant crosses for their lost loves...heartwrenching. I remember just looking at my sister and hoping this wouldn't be us next year on this day. It was a sobering reminder to the reality of what was going on in our lives.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">This year, Rememberance Day has a whole new meaning to us. Rememberance Day has always had personal meaning in our family; my Grandma lost her first love Dennis in WWII and my Grandpa fought in the same war and lost two of his brothers. This year we have lost a few more that are close to us. Nathaniel lost five of his good friends in Afghanistan. So this blog post is my small tribute to them. To say thank you. To say we miss you. To say we will always remember. And never forget.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Halloween! Witches, goblins, vampires, ghosts, and ghouls! Carving pumpkins, the smell of ginger and spice, and foggy nights! My favorite excuse to tell ghost stories and watch a favorite spooky movie every night! We watch scary movies a lot any way for fun, but when I know Halloween is coming up we literally have a scary movie marathon as a sort of a countdown! My favorite movies to watch around Halloween are the Shining, the Witches of Eastwick, Beetlejuice, Hocus Pocus, the Witches, the Hand that Rocks the Cradle, the Good Child, the Exorcist, Halloween, Sleepy Hollow, the Birds, Dracula, the Addams Family and SO many more....which are your favorite scary movies to watch? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TMsoMm6cSTI/AAAAAAAABQg/hCtVqXswlxU/s1600/a98100_1000_invite_xl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" nx="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TMsoMm6cSTI/AAAAAAAABQg/hCtVqXswlxU/s320/a98100_1000_invite_xl.jpg" width="256" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Since I accidentally slept through the first two hours of the auction (oopsie) I rushed to meet with Holly and see if there was anything sweet left! And luckily there was!!! It seemed like birdcages were a popular item that day since they had 3 there up for auction! The first one was a gorgeous ornate black iron one which sold for more than either of us were willing to pay. So after the second birdcage sold, I had my eye on the third!....duh duh duh... You guessed it, I'm now the proud owner of that birdcage..... and a beautiful old mantle mirror, spending a total of $70.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I always loved old birdcages and this one was no exception...but the true excitement for me is what Holly suggested I do with it....convert it into a plant atrium! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The first chance I had, I flew on over to the most gorgeous garden center imaginable...Wellington. <div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">There were so many to chose from, too many! Herbs, succulents, grasses, ferns, little flowering plants, and pots galore! I wanted something useful so I chose a combination of herbs and some lavender for the beautiful fragrance! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TKK7wU2-yzI/AAAAAAAABO8/M-DBbANJpj8/s1600/IMG_1954.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" px="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TKK7wU2-yzI/AAAAAAAABO8/M-DBbANJpj8/s320/IMG_1954.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">And without further adieu....here is the AFTER....in all it's SPLENDOR (yes I'm in LOVE):</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> There are still a few small odds and ends to pull together to bring it to completion...a couple areas to re-grout, a small area on the wall to sand and repaint, and of course I MUST buy that gorgeous Anthro shower curtain I've been drooling over. I have literally gone in the store 3 times...picked it up and put it down right before making it to the checkout. On my student budget I can't really talk myself into the $115 price tag...just yet!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">The wall art was an easy choice for this bathroom! I learned so much about tiling and plumbing! And I actually am going to be looking for another antique dresser to turn into a vanity for our master bathroom very soon!</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">Since we spanned this project over a month and a half it didn`t seem to cost a whole lot. Kitchens and bathrooms are so important in a house. Especially for resale. They can also cost a lot more to remodel. I can honestly say I probably wouldn`t have even started a project like this without the incentive of free tile! And luckily, since we spent nothing on the tile, I was able to splurge on the sink, faucet, and mirror! I think when I do our master bath I will try and keep the budget at $500...now that will be a challenge...but who doesn`t like a good challenge every now and again!</div><a href="http://www.mylivesignature.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://signatures.mylivesignature.com/54487/314/82D77B967A2BDD6F2526ABCAC78FB55C.png" style="background: none transparent scroll repeat 0% 0%; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px;" /></a>Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01293156265765155765noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5554642467238193173.post-84051766537270390012010-09-02T23:31:00.018-06:002010-09-02T23:45:40.731-06:00Antique Dresser turned Vanity<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Hopefully in less than a weeks time I can show off the final reveal for this bathroom makeover! The vanity and floor are complete! Plumbing and all! The only things I have left to tackle besides a few odds and ends are a new shower curtain (hoping to get another pretty Anthro one), a vanity mirror, new light fixture, and PAINT!!!!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here is a<em> somewhat</em> tutorial on how to transform a dresser into a custom vanity!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">First things first...since I am not putting a slab of marble or any other hard surface on top of this piece, I made sure I lacquered the<em> dickens</em> out of the top of it so it could withstand a lot of splashing and water droplets in the years to come! Once dry, I took the sink 'cut-out' template that came with the sink and made a few modifications of my own (specifically, I made the 'cut-out' quite a bit smaller, so the strength of the vanity would be less compromised. I wanted to be able to cut out JUST ENOUGH for the sink to fit snug :)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TIB21h9H6uI/AAAAAAAABN8/1qiE5EOeQPs/s1600/IMG_2526.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" ox="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TIB21h9H6uI/AAAAAAAABN8/1qiE5EOeQPs/s640/IMG_2526.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I cut out the center of the template, so I had a mock paper sink, and the center was the area of wood to be removed. I secured the template with painters tape and traced the inner square onto the dresser. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I actually had step-by-step photos of how to do all this but I think I accidentally deleted them in the process :(</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">After the square was traced, I removed the template and drilled a hole inside the square so that my skill saw blade had somewhere to start the cut-out process....I then pushed the saw towards the <em>line drawn</em> cut-out and trying my VERY BEST to stay on the lines, cut out the square. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TIB3F29cQBI/AAAAAAAABOE/l4BVU99ZxPU/s1600/IMG_2528.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" ox="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TIB3F29cQBI/AAAAAAAABOE/l4BVU99ZxPU/s640/IMG_2528.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Voila! I'm pretty proud of myself :) As you can see (ahem...the right side of the cut-out), it's not perfect! But it did the job because when I took that sink and plopped it in the hole, it FIT!!!! First time was a charm in this case (this never happens for me)!!!! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TIB3UWlyxZI/AAAAAAAABOM/5x1o9o3HWlo/s1600/IMG_2532.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" ox="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TIB3UWlyxZI/AAAAAAAABOM/5x1o9o3HWlo/s640/IMG_2532.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I assembled everything up in the bathroom and called a plumber to re-attach the pipes. I could have done this part on my own, but after tackling the toilet myself, I thought I'd sit back and watch on this one :P</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">As you can see, the walls are still needing paint, and that's the very next thing on my list.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Refitting the drawers was pretty easy as well. Using a measuring tape, I marked where the pipes were on the wooden drawers. Then I took my same handy skill saw and cut out space for the pipes. Using some 1/4" wood I made new drawer edges on the inside of the drawers, using a combination of glue and the odd nail to keep them in place.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TIB956f6zpI/AAAAAAAABOc/LkeaFvm9C40/s1600/IMG_2545.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" ox="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TIB956f6zpI/AAAAAAAABOc/LkeaFvm9C40/s640/IMG_2545.JPG" width="468" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I can't wait to tie all the odds and ends together in this bathroom. I love looking at it and knowing that we put the whole thing together. So far the WHOLE project has cost us less than $500! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TIB-VbW1nMI/AAAAAAAABOk/jR0t_cjEpVk/s1600/IMG_2548.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" ox="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TIB-VbW1nMI/AAAAAAAABOk/jR0t_cjEpVk/s640/IMG_2548.JPG" width="508" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I'm also seeking your opinions on this <em>one</em> little detail! These pretty antique looking faucet handles came with FOUR combinations as options!!! Stainless or Antique ceramic? English or Francais? (I kinda like the french writing for a touch of whimsy...so I think I'm sold on that idea)...but I really want to know what you think about the two handle finishes??</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><em>Stainless</em>?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TIB-hKk6PHI/AAAAAAAABOs/xYlrhwt_-TY/s1600/IMG_2551.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" ox="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TIB-hKk6PHI/AAAAAAAABOs/xYlrhwt_-TY/s640/IMG_2551.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Or <em>antique ceramic</em>?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TIB-rQZaULI/AAAAAAAABO0/TYZYarh9Xf4/s1600/IMG_2557.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" ox="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TIB-rQZaULI/AAAAAAAABO0/TYZYarh9Xf4/s640/IMG_2557.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I start my last university semester next Wednesday so I NEED to get myself in gear and paint BEFORE I get swamped with biology homework! Someone please light a fire under me :) </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Also, any thoughts on paint colours? I'm definitely going with a sort of white in here. Since there are no windows I want to keep it airy and fresh...but I'm wondering what undertone will compliment the mix of cream in the dresser and cool greys in the tiles?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">~Happy Long Weekend Everyone~</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

The tiling part was by far the easiest part of this reno believe it or not! Since we are SO close to crossing the finish line on this one I thought I would do a quick update on the floor portion and leave the final reveal for a later day. </div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">Since our home is only 5 years old I was told the glue under our linoleum would still be a little soft and therefore it would be much easier to screw in a thin sub floor over top of the linoleum than to peel it up and scrape off all the glue. SO we gutted the bathroom (to find a plumbing nightmare...which I won't bore you with but I will say this: make sure you have shut off valves installed to the water lines supplying the sink if you don't plan on installing a new sink right away!) Then I screwed down a sub floor with 1/4" plywood.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/THHQIUrTzAI/AAAAAAAABM0/DpMShYsv9TA/s1600/IMG_2499.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" ox="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/THHQIUrTzAI/AAAAAAAABM0/DpMShYsv9TA/s400/IMG_2499.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>The sub floor took no time at all and by raising the floor 1/4" plus the thickness of the tile I also had to make two other adjustments when the floor was all said and done: shave down the bottom of the door to allow room for the door to fit and add a closet flange extension to the toilet so that the flange would be flush/a little above the newly installed tile (I am an expert at installing toilets now LOL).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/THHRLzo2NGI/AAAAAAAABNU/ulFTXKg2aIw/s1600/IMG_2511.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" ox="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/THHRLzo2NGI/AAAAAAAABNU/ulFTXKg2aIw/s400/IMG_2511.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A cool trick I learned while helping Tony install our hardwood floors is that in order to get the new floor to fit nicely under the door jams is to put a small piece of the new floor plus the sub floor up against the door jam so you have the new floor height. Then take a saw (there are much easier saws to use than the hand saw I used) and rest it against the top of the sample piece of floor and saw horizontally.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/THHQZNkY4EI/AAAAAAAABM8/Q03RomMeGrE/s1600/IMG_2507.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" ox="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/THHQZNkY4EI/AAAAAAAABM8/Q03RomMeGrE/s400/IMG_2507.JPG" width="400" /></a><br />

<br />
<br />
The saw I used took a lot of elbow grease but its flat large size actually helped me saw a straight line and eventually once you get through the wood it takes a little wiggling and the piece should fall off...<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/THHQpmhiHAI/AAAAAAAABNE/DR-xJtjhYpI/s1600/IMG_2508.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" ox="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/THHQpmhiHAI/AAAAAAAABNE/DR-xJtjhYpI/s400/IMG_2508.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here's a good pic of the piece that once you pull it out, your tile slides right under for a nice seamless fit (once you caulk of course :)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/THHQ5_VpIVI/AAAAAAAABNM/Nn7hx25g5K8/s1600/IMG_2510.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" ox="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/THHQ5_VpIVI/AAAAAAAABNM/Nn7hx25g5K8/s400/IMG_2510.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Hey lookie who is helping me? Yes a rare sight but I had to snap a photo of this! Since it was our first time laying tiles and they are so small and staggered we laid them all out first, numbered them with chalk and did all our cuts before starting to lay them onto the mortar. We also bought this great little wet tile saw from Home Depot for only $64! Since we plan on tiling 3 bathrooms in this house I figured it was worth the investment.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/THHRavW-SgI/AAAAAAAABNc/K9bn1wGWcwM/s1600/IMG_2517.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" ox="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/THHRavW-SgI/AAAAAAAABNc/K9bn1wGWcwM/s640/IMG_2517.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I also installed new 5" tall baseboard to match the new baseboards in the rest of the house....and</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">TA DA!!!!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/THHRjUim4kI/AAAAAAAABNk/X8jGdEOtfzg/s1600/IMG_2537.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" ox="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/THHRjUim4kI/AAAAAAAABNk/X8jGdEOtfzg/s640/IMG_2537.JPG" width="544" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">It's definitely not perfect but it really does look pretty good and I'm pretty proud of all our hard work. I still have to re stain the room divider since when I pulled it up from when it was on the linoleum the hidden ends which are now exposed need some colour.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">I can't wait to get a plumber in this week to extend our pipes up to our new vanity and sink and show you the other half of this transformation! </div><a href="http://www.mylivesignature.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://signatures.mylivesignature.com/54487/314/82D77B967A2BDD6F2526ABCAC78FB55C.png" style="background: none transparent scroll repeat 0% 0%; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px;" /></a>Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01293156265765155765noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5554642467238193173.post-26258374213546613122010-08-10T22:07:00.000-06:002010-08-10T22:07:57.853-06:00Sink or Float?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I have been a busy bee over the past few days and I thought I'd update everyone on our bluestone floor reno! All I can say at this point is that it turned into a WAY bigger job than we expected and I actually swore the other day that I never wanted to pick up a tile or mortar again for as long as I live LOL! Okay I already take it back. BUT I am really needing everyone's help on making a certain decision....</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">SO we ripped out our old contractor's stock vanity and here is the new antique dresser turned vanity we are replacing it with...remember this before picture from our trip to Victoria?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TGIeFcbIddI/AAAAAAAABMs/t03r2iLW3as/s1600/IMG_2153.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" mx="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TGIeFcbIddI/AAAAAAAABMs/t03r2iLW3as/s320/IMG_2153.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here's her debut with a new coat of paint...the two bottom drawers have a slight mint tint to them and the rest of the piece is a gorgeous cream....complete with pretty crystal knobs...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TGIbaa_BkWI/AAAAAAAABMU/6X6wDWoZGv0/s1600/IMG_2370.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" mx="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TGIbaa_BkWI/AAAAAAAABMU/6X6wDWoZGv0/s640/IMG_2370.JPG" width="378" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Now here is my dilemma...I cannot for the life of me make up my mind between the following two sinks...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">they look quite similar, but there are a few differences which are really making the choice difficult for me...and I really would LOVE your input on this one!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here is the first one.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TGIcWG-ouQI/AAAAAAAABMc/r3h89fhnZ98/s1600/IMG_2519.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" mx="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TGIcWG-ouQI/AAAAAAAABMc/r3h89fhnZ98/s320/IMG_2519.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">pros about #1: its smaller, so there is more counter space, I have to cut a MUCH smaller hole in the counter top to place this one which will help keep the top of the dresser strong and sturdy</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">cons: it only has one hole for the taps which means I have a lot less choice for the taps and I cannot have those pretty faucets with two handles, and the inside of the bowl is a modern scoop shape which I'm not loving.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here is number 2</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TGIccvWZG5I/AAAAAAAABMk/h03jUKHsNwE/s1600/IMG_2521.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" mx="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TGIccvWZG5I/AAAAAAAABMk/h03jUKHsNwE/s320/IMG_2521.JPG" /></a></div>pros about #2: it has 3 holes so I can pick out a very nice faucet! (which seems pretty important to me for the final look and I have a lot more choice of faucets) <br />
cons: I have to cut a much larger hole in the top of the dresser which I worry will compromise the strength of the dresser. However the wood on the top of the dresser is decently thick and sturdy feeling.<br />
<br />
SO which should I choose? The one which will maintain all the strength of the vanity top and settle for a less attractive faucet?<br />
OR pick the sink which involves a larger hole to be cut possibly compromising the strength and get to pick the faucet I want?<br />
If anyone has any expertise on this or has done this before how much does a bigger hole compromise the strength of the counter top?<br />
I SOOOOO look forward to hearing what you all have to say!<br />

I have been putting money in a jar for a long time now so that one day we can redo our master bathroom floor in this gorgeous marble stone. BUT I think I have another favorite now!!! Has anyone heard of Bluestone? Well I sure hadn't! When we were home in Victoria, my step mom Leah offered us their leftover honed bluestone tiles they had! And we all know you can't beat free!!! Here are a few pics of this gorgeous stone in action in case you are like me and had never seen it befor LOL!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TFd2JBS7_vI/AAAAAAAABLw/lzTrwlgfEvs/s1600/bluestone2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" bx="true" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TFd2JBS7_vI/AAAAAAAABLw/lzTrwlgfEvs/s400/bluestone2.jpg" width="265" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #444444; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I love the stone against white walls!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TFd2aD1WxNI/AAAAAAAABL4/KrLvIKFVMt0/s1600/Blue-Stone-After---Honed-and-Sealed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" bx="true" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TFd2aD1WxNI/AAAAAAAABL4/KrLvIKFVMt0/s400/Blue-Stone-After---Honed-and-Sealed.jpg" width="400" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TFd2cZZBWII/AAAAAAAABMA/O9Haxo9imhk/s1600/bluestone.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" bx="true" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TFd2cZZBWII/AAAAAAAABMA/O9Haxo9imhk/s320/bluestone.jpg" width="201" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Here is a photo of our new tiles...they are in very long rectangular bricks on a sheet...so we can stagger them nicely. At first Nathaniel wanted to do a feature wall with them, then I thought of doing a bathtub surround, however we have the type of tub with the acrylic surround all in one piece. So I decided it would look great as the new floors for our second bathroom upstairs.</span> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">This seems like a pretty big project for me so even though I'm majorly excited to get started, I am a little bit nervous! I have never done tiles before so I need to do my homework on this one!Any tips or tricks would be great:) I also plan on removing the old vanity and putting an antique one in I just refinished...and since the antique vanity has caster wheels I will be going all the way under the vanity with the tiles.</span><br />

OR do you think it would look better on a wall in another room, leaning on the floor against a wall, or on top of a dresser (leaning against the wall)....or if you have any other ideas (excluding the garbage LOL) please feel free to suggest! One thing I DON'T want is to look like I have a theme room...so as far as beachy and nautical things, the ship wheel and my wall of ship and beach paintings is where it ends in this room. To mix it up I have my super pretty chandelier and a few other whimsical and girly touches.</span></div><br />

Oil paintings and sketches are my two favorite styles and I'm so excited to share my most recent addition to my collection! Nathaniel, my very own king of surprises, picked me up this amazing oil painting when we were home in Victoria~</span></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

He is amazingly talented and I WISH he had a website of some sort so I could let everyone see his other pieces he has for sale. He is so humble and although he has been featured at the Victoria Art Gallery he still only sells out of his home and by word of mouth. He has many beautiful ship, ocean, and beach paintings as well as other scenery too.</span></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I definitely want one of his gorgeous beach scenes too! As well as one with waves crashing on rocks! His ocean colours and stormy skies just bring so much emotion to me every time I look at my pretty painting!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">If anyone is interested in seeing his collection of beautiful oil paintings or would like to buy one please contact me and I will put you in touch with Yves. And in the meantime BOTH Nathaniel and I are going to bug him until he makes a website so everyone can marvel at his talents! OR at the very least help him create an etsy shop!</span><br />

And I'm not complaining :) After 7 months of lonely worry filled days I'm welcoming as much normalcy as possible!! We are both back at work and although we do feel a little blue that the holidays are over, we have so much fun ahead of us this summer and I am itching to post about all my latest furniture transformations! But one thing is FOR SURE...we miss home already! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TEqcXiaZX9I/AAAAAAAABEU/0z01jO5eHak/s1600/blog+july+13+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" hw="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TEqcXiaZX9I/AAAAAAAABEU/0z01jO5eHak/s640/blog+july+13+4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Being home was just what we needed! Sometimes I wish the days were longer!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Currently my Mom doesn't have a whole lot of room in her house because my Grandparents live with her so she can look after them instead of them going to an 'Old Folk's Home'...which I think is pretty nice of her. So she made the sacrifice to put all her own furniture in storage so my Grandparents could move their own stuff in and feel at HOME :)</span></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Well the other day while in Victoria we went over to my Aunt and Uncle's house for a salmon BBQ dinner (actually my Dad and Uncle caught the fish on a recent fishing retreat they had gone on a few days before). It was nice because nearly everyone on my Dad's side of the family lives in Victoria so we were able to see them all, it was almost like a family reunion!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My Aunt and Uncle live in one of my all time favorite houses and I only WISH I had before pictures because they originally bought this place for the property and not the very small fixer-upper home that existed. Shortly after they bought the place they tore it down to the bare bones and built a new dream home onto it! It was actually featured a few years ago in a local magazine...wish I could remember the name of it off the top of my head! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TEPWDSJuAEI/AAAAAAAAA-c/qubaucklFMc/s1600/IMG_2218.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" hw="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TEPWDSJuAEI/AAAAAAAAA-c/qubaucklFMc/s640/IMG_2218.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">My Aunt did have some help from a local architect with the design but she has amazing taste and I know the Cape-Cod/Nantucket style was all her idea! It's like East Coast meets West Coast!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TEPXOTK0amI/AAAAAAAAA-0/QGDN80xxMVI/s1600/IMG_2221.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" hw="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TEPXOTK0amI/AAAAAAAAA-0/QGDN80xxMVI/s640/IMG_2221.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I kinda sprung it on my Aunt that I was taking some pictures for my blog and so she didn't have any time to tidy... so I kept the photo tour short and limited it to only a few of my favorite rooms...although they are all beautiful!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TEPX3OtnsuI/AAAAAAAAA_E/E9T_rZS2Vzk/s1600/IMG_2224.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" hw="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TEPX3OtnsuI/AAAAAAAAA_E/E9T_rZS2Vzk/s640/IMG_2224.JPG" width="428" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I love their painted risers and the huge round knobs on the railing!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TEPYGKC5FUI/AAAAAAAAA_M/y-3ofDuL0T4/s1600/IMG_2225.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" hw="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TEPYGKC5FUI/AAAAAAAAA_M/y-3ofDuL0T4/s640/IMG_2225.JPG" width="428" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I dream about a home one day with tons of windows and light like these ones!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TEPY0crIONI/AAAAAAAAA_k/oadcXoJzGsk/s1600/IMG_2228.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" hw="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tkkcgQj6U5U/TEPY0crIONI/AAAAAAAAA_k/oadcXoJzGsk/s640/IMG_2228.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I love the nautical style in their home...very East Coast! Their home is filled with galley windows and the smell of ocean air!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
